Electric trains on a frequented line in Brno region

Today, Správa železnic festively completed the modernisation and electrification of the railway line from Brno to Zastávka u Brna. The reconstruction of the entire approximately 20-kilometre section, which plays an important role in Brno's suburban transport, enabled the addition of further regional connections. Tomorrow, modern electric units will start to run there, thanks to the increased line speed they will be able to cover the entire route in less time. Passengers will also appreciate the convenient access to platforms at all stations and stops.

One of the oldest lines in the region was modernised, the first trains left Brno for the station with the then name of Boží Požehnání (God's Blessing) as early as 1856.

“In recent months we have seen a big boom in the completion of transport construction. It is good that this is also relevant for the railway. Thanks to modernisation, environment-friendly electric units will go out to the densely populated region to provide transport service at short intervals,” says Prime Minister Petr Fiala.

The electrification of the section from Brno-Horní Heršpice to Střelice was the first to be carried out between 2020 and 2022. This was followed by the second stage. “The works included double-tracking and electrification of the almost ten-kilometre section from Střelice to Zastávka u Brna, thanks to which we were able to increase the capacity of this busy line. Now we can accommodate the necessary number of trains that will offer fast and high-capacity connections,” describes Minister of Transport Martin Kupka.

The Omice and Rosice u Brna stops, and the Zastávka u Brna station were reconstructed. The railway station in Tetčice was divided into a station of the same name and a station without platforms. The access to trains is level via a level crossing, in other places barrier-free access is provided by lifts or inclined walkways. “The modernisation will allow to increase the line speed. After the installation of ETCS, which is already underway, trains will speed up to 120 km/h,” adds Jiří Svoboda, Director General of Správa železnic.

“The modernised stops and stations with barrier-free access correspond to travelling in the 21st century. I believe that this will help more people change from cars to trains. The South Moravian Region plans to introduce new hybrid train units on this electrified line, for which it has already announced a tender. This will not only bring environmentally sustainable transport, but will also increase comfort for passengers,” reveals the Governor of the South Moravian Region Jan Grolich.

The construction contractors were Subterra, OHLA ŽS and Elektrizace železnic Praha. Its total cost amounts to CZK 4,285,895,409. Project Electrification of the line incl. pre-electrification modifications Brno – Zastávka u Brna, 2nd stage, is proposed for co-financing by the European Union from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) within the National Recovery Plan. The estimated EU contribution is CZK 1.318 billion.
